Preview Ride Comfort Control for Electric Active Suspension (eActive3)

This paper reports the results of a study into a preview control that uses the displacement of the road surface in front of the vehicle to improve for front and rear actuator responsiveness delays, as well as delays due to calculation, communication, and the like. This study also examined the effect of a preview control using the eActive3 electric active suspension system, which is capable of controlling the roll, pitch, and warp modes of vehicle motion.

Prediction of the Life of CVJ Boot in Design Stage and Establishment of an Optimal Design Method with FEA

In a stage of designing a CVJ boot, analytic conditions of FEA method are established so that values calculated with the FEA method coincide with the actually measured values. This has made it possible to predict the life of the boot under bench testing. Furthermore, the boot field life can also be predicted by the minor rule based on the joint-angle frequencies of a vehicle. As a result, it has become possible to determine an optimal configuration in the design stage and to decrease the number of test cycles, resulting in reduced development lead time.

Air flow around a car front end configuration and through the radiator and condenser was computed simultaneously. Although the engine compartment was simplified to reduce computational cost, comparison of experimental data with the analysis showed excellent prediction of the air flow through the radiator and condenser.

This paper describes a system which, in order to give a more natural and pleasing steering feeling, has incorporated vehicle speed and steering angle sensors in a hydraulic reaction type power steering system for control in accordance with the frequency of steering angles, control in accordance with vehicle speed and steering angle and control in accordance with forward and reverse acceleration. This system enables the steering characteristics to be matched to the road conditions; light steering for driving in the city, or increased responsiveness for winding mountain roads or sporty driving. The aims in developing this system and details of the method of control are described.

Plasma Treatment for Painting of Polypropylene Bumper

The colour painting of polypropylene bumpers has required development of a new polypropylene surface treatment which provides improved adhesion of the paint film to polypropylene. According to the results of various improvement studies on the application of plasma treatment, it has been discovered that surface treatment by means of plasma of an oxygen and nitrogen gas mixture activated by microwave (2,450 MHz) provides a remarkable improvement in adhesion. Furthermore, establishing a technique to diffuse plasma effectively within the treatment chamber has enabled a uniform surface treatment of several polypropylene bumpers formed in large and complicated shapes.

Objective Evaluation of Exciting Engine Sound in Passenger Compartment During Acceleration

This paper describes an objective evaluation method for the engine sound quality in a car interior during acceleration. Two principal factors, pleasantness and raciness, of the engine sound quality were found with a subjective evaluation test in a laboratory. Psycho-acoustic indexes corresponding to these factors were revealed by investigating the correlation among subjective ratings and acoustic characteristics. The index of raciness was originally proposed for the assessment of sound that makes driving fun when the sound is emphasized. We propose that the design of engine sound is required with consideration of the balance between pleasantness and raciness.

Nylon 6-Clay Hybrid - Synthesis, Properties and Application to Automotive Timing Belt Cover

ϵ-caprolactam was polymerized in the interlayer space of montmorillonite, the clay mineral yielding a nylon-clay hybrid (NCH). X-ray and TEM measurements revealed that each template of the silicate, which was 1 nm thick, was dispersed in the nylon 6 matrix, and that the interlayer distance of clay increased continuously from 1.2 nm for the unintercalated material to 21.4 nm for the intercalated material. Thus, NCH is a polymer-based molecular composite or a nano-composite. NCH contains 1-15 vol% of monolayer clay. Injection-molded NCH showed excellent mechanical properties compared with nylon 6 in terms of tensile strength, tensile modulus and heat resistance. The tensile modulus of NCH was twice that of Nylon 6, and the heat distortion temperature increased from 65°C for nylon 6 to 145°C for the NCH containing only 1.6 vol% of a clay mineral. It was found that such excellent properties of an NCH system was due to the strong ionic interaction between nylon 6 and the silicate layer.

Method of Fatigue Life Estimation for Spot-Welded Structures

A method of fatigue life estimation for the spot-welds of vehicle body structures by means of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was studied. 6 general forces applied to a nugget of spot-weld under multiaxial loads were determined and the Nominal Structural Stress (σns) was calculated from them. It was confirmed that fatigue strength of the spot-welds under various multiaxial loads could be estimated universally by using σns. Based on the theory of elasticity of plates, stress of spot-weld nugget was analyzed. The theoretical equations for determining the principal stress at the nugget edge from6 general forces acting on a nugget were derived. And the principal stress was defined as the σns. The value of σns was determined by FEM that used a solid model and compared with the theoretical calculation value. They agreed quite well. Fatigue tests of DC specimens under various multiaxial loads (shear plus cross tension and tensile shear plus torsion) were conducted.

A system to measure transient temperature distribution on the brake disc rotor at high speed braking has been developed and its measuring principle and configuration were discussed in this paper. This system consists of two revolution sensors and two sets of optical fiber array, photoelectric elements, and microprocessor, which fiber array is so arranged that it faces the brake disc rotor. This new system has the following features: (1) Measuring is made using a visible radiation wavelength range for red hot temperatures higher than 550°C.

Measurement of Piston Secondary Motion Using the New Digital Telemeter

The authors have developed a measurement technique using a new digital telemeter which measures the piston secondary motion as ensuring high accuracy while under the operation. We applied this new digital telemeter to several measurements and analysis on the piston secondary motion that can cause piston noises, and here are some of the results from our measurement. We have confirmed that these piston motions vary by only several tenths of millimeter changes of the piston specifications such as the piston-pin offset and the center of gravity of the piston. As in other cases, we have found that a mere change of pressure in the crankcase or the amount of lubricating oil supplied on the cylinder bore varies the piston motion that may give effect on the piston noises.

Machine Learning Based Technology for Reducing Engine Starting Vibration of Hybrid Vehicles

Engine starting vibration of hybrid vehicle with Toyota hybrid system has variations even in the same vehicle, and a large vibration that occurs rarely may cause stress to the passengers. The contribution analysis based on the vibration theory and statistical analysis has been done, but the primary factor of the rare large vibration has not been clarified because the number of factors is enormous. From this background, we apply machine learning that can reproduce multivariate and complicated relationships to analysis of variation factors of engine starting vibration. Variations in magnitude of the exciting force such as motor torque for starting the engine and in-cylinder pressure of the engine and timing of these forces are considered as factors of the variations. In addition, there are also nonlinear factors such as backlash of gears as a factor of variations.

Low Frequency Noise Reduction by Improving Sound Insulation Materials

Conventionally, sound insulation materials have been applied to control interior noise above 500 Hz, and damping materials to control interior noise below 500 Hz. In this paper, the noise control component for vehicle panels, which consists of damping material and sound insulation material, is investigated by using a two-degrees-of-freedom system. The investigation shows that sound insulation material can be effective in reducing interior noise below 500 Hz if its stiffness is reduced. This stiffness depends not only on the spring of the material itself but also on its pneumatic spring which is determined by air-flow resistance. This paper concludes with applications of techniques to reduce interior noise below 500 Hz by improving sound insulation materials.

Life Cycle Inventory Study of Automotive Fuel Tank

As a means of effectively incorporating the concept of “life cycle” for reducing the environmental impact of the automobile, we carried out a life cycle inventory study on a part-by-part basis. The targets of our study are the fuel tanks that are made of different materials and manufacturing processes. One is made of steel, and the other is made of plastic, both perform identical functions. Our evaluation study encompasses the period from the manufacturing of the main materials until the disposal of the tanks. The evaluation items consist of the amount of energy consumed and the emissions (of CO2, NOx, SOx, and PM) that are released into the atmosphere. The results show that the plastic tank poses a greater burden in terms of the amount of energy consumed and the CO2 and NOx emitted.

Lateral Shake Analysis of Open Top Cars

This paper analyzes the vibration of open-top cars known as lateral shake. The characteristics of the phenomenon were identified by means of road tests and a test method called the shake test was devised to reproduce these characteristics in order that the respective roles of the suspension, body and engine could be determined. On the basis of the analysis findings, a simple but practical simulation model was realized and used to investigate various methods of reducing lateral shake. The simulations indicated that although changing the natural frequency of the suspension has little effect, increasing the natural torsional frequency of the body and/or utilizing the engine as a dynamic damper results in a significant improvement. Further experiments conclusively demonstrated that by optimizing the body structure in accordance with FEM analysis results and optimizing the spring constant of the engine mounts, the level of lateral shake can be halved.

Large Eddy Simulation of Spray Injection to Turbulent Duct Flow from a Slit Injector

The behavior of spray injections to turbulent duct flows from a slit injector for direct-injection gasoline engines was investigated using a combination of large eddy simulation (LES) and Lagrangian discrete droplet model (DDM). As a result, diffusion of droplets in stronger turbulent flows was observed at a later stage of the injection. Moreover, we compared calculation and experimental results by generating a pseudo-particle image from the calculation result.

JAMA (Japan Automobile Manufactures Association, Inc.)'s guideline for car navigation systems is being decided on displayed the amount of information while driving. The position of a display and the estimated equation, which could be applied from a passenger car to a heavy truck, was studied. The evaluation index was the distance which drivers could become aware of a preceding vehicle by their peripheral vision, because car accidents while drivers glance at an in- vehicle display are almost the rear end collisions. As the results, the lower limit of a position of an in-vehicle display for a passenger car was 30 degrees, and a heavy truck was 46 degrees.

Investigations of the impact of 10% ethanol blended fuels on performances of sold gasoline vehicles in the Japanese market already on the road in Japan

The study of 10% ethanol blended gasoline (E10 gasoline) utilization has been conducted in the Japan Auto-Oil Program (JATOP). In order to clarify the impact of E10 gasoline on vehicle performances, exhaust emissions, evaporative emissions, driveability and material compatibility have been investigated by using domestic gasoline vehicles including mini motor vehicles which are particular to Japan. The test results reveal that E10 gasoline has no impact on exhaust emissions, engine startup time and acceleration period under the hot start condition, but a slight deterioration is observed in some test cases under the cold start condition using E10 gasolines with 50% distillation temperature (T50) level set to the upper limit of Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) K 2202. Regarding evaporative emissions, the tested vehicles shows no remarkable increase in the hot soak loss (HSL), diurnal breathing loss (DBL) and running loss (RL) testing with E10 gasolines.
